Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

Infrastructure as a service is delivery of the computing infrastructure as a fully outsourced service versus an in-house, capital investment-sourced model. Rather than purchasing servers, software licenses, data center space and network equipment, clients purchase those resources as a fully outsourced service.

GNi delivers IaaS using a dedicated hosting environment model proven to be the most secure and robust technology platform for its customers’ mission-critical applications. This redundant, enterprise-level hosting platform allows users to leverage GNi’s strength in server and network management while investing in their own application management. GNi’s service model focuses on the first four layers of the OSI model, through the operating system layer but below applications layers (See figure 1).

IaaS Benefits

Dynamic scaling – IaaS users benefit from the ability to increase or decrease several aspects of the environment in near real time, as business needs fluctuate. For instance, a SaaS provider may require a small amount of server capacity during the early stages of application development, then substantially more capacity during alpha and beta testing. After commercial launch, the need for server infrastructure may continue to fluctuate as well, depending upon market success of the offering or seasonality.

Usage-based pricing – Rather than purchasing infrastructure that may not be used for months or even years, customers can purchase the exact amount of infrastructure they require at any specific time. Operating on a “pay as you go” model ensures IaaS users pay only for what they are using.

Reduced capital and personnel costs – By reducing or eliminating the amount of in-house infrastructure, corporations realize substantial reductions in both capital expenditures and ongoing personnel costs. This enables corporations to focus capital resources on their own core competencies, to expand, refine, or market product offerings rather than purchasing IT hardware.

Access to superior IT resources – IaaS users enjoy access to enterprise-grade IT infrastructure and engineering resources that might otherwise be cost-prohibitive. For instance, implementing best-of-breed firewalls or retaining networking engineers with the highest levels of certifications on staff might exceed many corporations’ financial budgets, while access via an outsourced model can be far more cost-effective.

Foundations of Superior IaaS

Outsourcing mission-critical IT operations to third party service providers requires a high degree of trust. GNi earns this trust through the robustness of its infrastructure model as well as its technical expertise and outstanding performance reliability.
